-is a grass , legumes ,a herbaceous plant that have been cut , dried and stored for use as animal fodder.
-usually hay not more contain more than 12-14% of moisture content.
role -to conserve fodder
-Providing better quality matter forage
-as a convenient feed(keep in storage area ~bring it to animals)
-it long period of storage
-easy to handle
-easy transportation and distribution
In the hay production -grass cut at optimum growth state (not in flowering seasons)
-Left in the field to dry
-Machine used to turn over grass avoid to drying (tedder)
-dried grass swept in rows(wind row)
-Hay baler used to compress dried grass
-can be useto conserve rise straw
Making of hay
1-the grass must be in fresh condition
2-Cut at appropriate age(Before flowering!!!-this is due to the quality will drop when it start to flowering)
3-Be dried (water content 12-14%)~usually takes about 2-3 days~in a hot day
Problem with making Hay
~need a plenty of sunshine
~easy to spoil if not quickly dried
~requires heavy investment in machinery
~requires large storages area
